1. Follow the steps mentioned here to install mysql. Make sure you install the 64 bit version.

2. Add gem ‘mysql2′,’< 0.3′ to the gemfile

3. Run bundle install

4. Run the following command
sudo install_name_tool -change libmysqlclient.16.dylib /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.16.dylib /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/mysql2-0.2.4/lib/mysql2/mysql2.bundle

Ensure you change the paths accordingly as per your installation.

5. Change database.yml to have adapter:mysql2 instead of mysql

6. Run rake db:migrate
